The Director of Academic Advising is responsible for leading Advising teams, and ensuring the department is providing high-quality support services that result in student retention and satisfaction. This individual assists with creating and supporting the strategic direction of the department, executing on improvement plans, and supporting cross-departmental goals in Admissions and Financial Aid.

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Lead team of managers to provide exceptional service and meet student population goal

  • Create staff metrics and goals that align with university objectives

  • Identify opportunities to create, improve and implement innovative services that support student success and retention goals

  • Develops and implements Student Advising policies and procedures and also ensures university policy is adhered to by department staff

  • Train and develop managers along with Student Services Advisors to ensure goals and objectives are met.

  • Collaborate with managers on effectively overseeing, supporting and developing Student Advisors

  • Review daily, weekly and session reports on the department’s performance and partner with managers and/or other departments on initiatives

  • Partner with various university leaders to evaluate and implement ways to streamline process/procedure and improve the student experience

  • Manage escalated service-related issues or complaints

  • Continue ongoing maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures and staff resources

  • Fostering positive energy and positive morale for the staff

  • Travel to and work out of multiple offices where staff are located

  • Requires the ability to work a manager schedule, including more than 40 hours, evenings, weekends to accommodate student and department needs

  • Manages to all university policies, procedures, integrity and ethical standards

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, Competencies

 

  • Knowledge of online delivery methods and effective communication in both traditional and online educational forums is essential.

  • Knowledge of the student life cycle and other university departments such as Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Services, Academics, and Career Services

  • Profound commitment to quality service and a desire to ensure student success

  • Strong communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in use of MS Word, MS Excel and ability to analyze data

  • Organizational and time management skills

  • Leadership skills in directing and motivating teams

  • Knowledge of online student services that impact retention

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, people, and execute on department direction and vision

 

 

Education and Experience:  Minimum

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (or international equivalent) required

  • 5 + years of experience in an education related role

  • 4 + year of management experience

 

Education and Experience:  Preferred

 

  • Master’s Preferred from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (or international equivalent)

  • 5 + years of experience with leading student advising in a post-secondary education environment.

  • 3 + years of experience leading managers
