POSITION SUMMARY

Faculty Mentors have an academic responsibility to aid Learners in achieving their educational objectives using relevant tools, resources, and materials incorporating learner needs and real-world contexts. Faculty Mentors also support course, program, and institutional educational outcomes using proper instructional and assessment strategies. Faculty Mentors must be able to provide effective and responsive academic instruction, counseling, and mentoring verbally and in written form.

  

RESPONSIBILITIES

Faculty Mentors (doctoral project committee chairs and members) have the following responsibilities without utilizing assistants or subcontracted parties. Such responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to:

 

  • In the context of doctoral projects, (a) Facilitate courses; (b) Participate in learner-related activities; (c) Assess learners; (d) Develop their capacities within the Canvas LMS, and (g) Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair.
  • Respond to learner inquiries within 48 hours, inclusive of returning phone calls, answering emails, and addressing content questions. Provide substantive feedback on assignments within 7 calendar days.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge in one’s discipline while enthusiastically facilitating learning spaces.
  • Provide high quality instruction, direction and mentorship for assigned learners throughout all phases of the doctoral project process.
  • Use CalSouthern email account or Canvas for all email communications.
  • Attend university and school events, meetings, and training, as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of learner information and records.
  • Complete CITI ethics training and ensure its currency and adherence to university and research requirements.
  • Complete CalSouthern doctoral project faculty mentor training.
  • Display timely and supportive mentoring to learners throughout the doctoral project, while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
  • Make recommendations to learners regarding the utilization of university resources as needed.
  • Actively engage with learners by offering individual and group office hours.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures outlined in DP Manual, Handbook, Faculty Guidelines, and those specified by CalSouthern University and the School of Behavioral Sciences.
  • Adhere to the ethical standards and policies of the university while promoting academic integrity, honesty, and rigor.
  • Establish consistent and encouraging communication with doctoral learner(s) throughout the doctoral process.
  • Engage in scholarly and/or professional research practices to enhance content/research expertise.
  • Participate in both institutional and programmatic accreditation activities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

Doctoral Project Committee member:

  • Direct and instruct the learner through written feedback with the goal of producing high-quality research.
  • Participate in the Oral Defense process.
  • Offer timely, constructive, and substantive feedback to facilitate revisions towards a successful project.
  • Collaborate with the learner’s full committee.
  • Collaborate with and follow the lead of the chair regarding interaction with the learner.

 

Doctoral Project Committee Chair:

  • Lead the committee in helping the learner through the development of the Topic, Problem, Research Questions, Proposal, Academic Review process, IRB application submission, Findings, Reference, Oral Defense, and the completion of the entire manuscript. 
  • Provide constructive and substantial feedback and deepen learner understanding of the research process, proposal structure, formatting, selection of methods and procedures for data collection and analysis, IRB application, and presentation of results.
  • Ensure learners follow established program requirements and use program tools such as templates, forms, and checklists.
  • Submit final grades within 3 calendar days of the course end date.
  • Maintain gradebooks and other documentation within Canvas. 
  • Conduct proactive outreach to ensure learners stay on pace, meet milestones and complete their doctoral project in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborate with and provide coordination between members serving on the committee.
  • Guide the learner regarding necessary changes to the doctoral project content and research.
  • Facilitate the successful completion of all IRB protocols. 
  • Supervise the completion of data collection. Advise the learner regarding necessary changes to collection methods and/or processes.
  • Inform Chair and Academic Advisor of learner concerns, including academic integrity violations, non-responsive or struggling learners, and violations of code of conduct.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Mentor position does not have any supervisory responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

1.      Terminal degree from an institutionally or regionally accredited institution in Clinical Psychology or Psychology.

2.      Prior experience serving as a doctoral committee member for learners who have successfully completed their dissertations.

3.      Evidence of quality research completed in the last ten years (e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, program evaluation reports, etc.).

4.      Online instructional experience and working in a virtual team environment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to analyze and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, and technical material related to the academic discipline, and University policies and procedures. Ability to prepare reports and business correspondence as requested. Ability to effectively present information both written and verbally and respond to questions from learners, University Administration, Academic Advisors, and other University associates.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS

A minimum of three years of online teaching experience and experience with learning management systems is required. Experience with Canvas LMS is preferred. Proficiency with Office 365 (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), Microsoft Teams and Zoom required. Must have Internet connectivity supporting streaming audio and videoconferencing meetings.

 

QUANTITATIVE AND RESEARCH SKILLS

Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts (such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions) to practical situations. A strong understanding of parametric and nonparametric quantitative analyses involving R (RStudio, Jamovi, and derivatives), SPSS, PSSP, GlueViz, Orange, G*Power, JASP, or other packages is desirable. Familiarity with Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods is desirable.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism such as formulas, scientific equations, and graphs. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position, the employee must regularly talk and actively listen. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include computer technology and written materials which require close vision and color vision. WORK ENVIRONMENT

As a remote employee, he/she must provide a workspace that is safe and conducive to a business atmosphere where staff can interact with and provide undivided attention, removed from distractions.

 

WHAT WE OFFER*

CalSouthern generally compensates its Adjunct Faculty on a per learner basis rate for the completion of a course, that takes into consideration a variety of factors including years of overall instruction experience and highest degree earned. The base rate for an Adjunct Faculty can range between $140.00 and $180.00 per learner per course completion.
